ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE: OSUN SPEAKER’S SECURITY AIDE SHOOTS COLLEAGUE TO DEATH

Tragedy struck over the weekend at Ika, in Ejigbo Local Government area when a security aide attached to the Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Honourable Najeem Salaam, simply identified as Idowu, allegedly shot another security personnel attached to his principal to death.

Idowu, who has been working with the Speaker since he assumed office in 2011, was said to have mistakenly shot a colleague identified as Bunmi to death at Ika during a public function in the town.

It was learnt that both Idowu and Bunmi had accompanied the Speaker to Ejigbo, his home town last Saturday where they all attended the presentation of staff of office to the Orangun of Ika-Ejigbo.

The deceased was trying to prevail on some youths in the town, who were fighting after the ceremony when the incident occurred.

However, his efforts to stop the fracas did not yield result, as some of the irate youths were attempting to mob him, a development which made him call his colleague who mistakenly shot him on the head in an attempt to shoot into the air to scare people away from the scene of the incident.

Confirming the incident, the press secretary to the Speaker, Mr Goke Butikakuro, said the incident happened last Saturday at about 11.30p.m. when the Speaker had already gone to bed.

According to him, “the deceased was the best friend of the police officer who mistakenly shot him. He actually went to the scene of the crisis with the aim of preventing the crisis and in an attempt to shoot into the air to dislodge the irate youths, he mistakenly shot his friend.”

“The Speaker had received the news of the ugly incident and the police are already doing investigations on the matter,” he added.

When contacted, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mr Ibrahim Maishanu, confirmed the incident, disclosing that it was a case of an accidental discharge.

He said three people had been arrested, including two people who were fighting and the police officer, who accidentally fired the shot that killed his colleague.
