Briton raped woman hours before his wedding to pregnant girlfriend

Derry McCann attacked the woman as she returned home from a night out with friends.

A British man admitted on Thursday raping a woman in a violent two-hour attack just hours before his wedding to his pregnant girlfriend.

Derry McCann, 28, who newspapers reported had only recently been freed from prison after carrying out a similar rape in 2006, attacked the woman as she returned home from a night out with friends shortly after midnight on January 13.

He dragged his victim, aged in her mid-20s, into a park near her house in Hackney, east London, raped and beat her, and then after the ordeal took pictures of her. Later that same day he married his partner.

He pleaded guilty at London's Snaresbrook Crown Court to four offences of rape and stealing his victim's phone, prosecutors said.

"This was a terrifying, violent and prolonged attack involving rapes committed by a man intent on inflicting fear and psychological suffering," said Andrew Held of Britain's Crown Prosecution Service.

McCann will be sentenced on April 28 and media reported judge Martyn Zeidman told him he would be going to jail for a "very, very long time".

Malabu $1.1 billion scandal: Despite evidence to the contrary, Eni again exonerates self of blame

The board of directors of Italian oil gaint, Eni, has again exonerated itself of any blame in the acquisition of OPL 245, infamously known as the Malabu Oil deal.

Despite investigators in Nigeria and Italy revealing that ENI and Shell, it’s partner in the deal, had prior knowledge of Malabu’s fraudulent past before the $1.1 billion deal was struck; and that their executives held meetings with the tainted Nigeria’s former petroleum minister, Dan Etete, an Eni-commissioned investigation has given the company a clean bill of health, a statement by the company claimed.

Ecobank Vital To Needbank’s African Growth Strategy

South Africa’s Nedbank on Tuesday said that Ecobank Transnational Incorporation (ETI) remains vital to its expansion elsewhere on the African continent despite booking a $293 million write-down on the value of its stake in the sub-Saharan lender. Ecobank has operations in nearly 40 countries outside its home market. Nedbank Chief Executive, Mike Brown, told reporters ““It’s obvious that we would be disappointed. But we still, however, remain optimistic on the long-term growth prospects in the rest of Africa.”

ETI’s operations in Central and West Africa are exposed to some economies that have been pressured by the commodity price slide and unfavourable currency swings since Nedbank bought a 20 per cent stake for $500 million in 2014.

Brown forecast another tough year for Ecobank, which makes the bulk of its earnings in Nigeria, before improving in 2018 and beyond. Nigeria, Africa’s biggest economy, has been hit by a currency crisis and its first recession in 25 years following the slide in oil prices since the middle of 2014.

Nedbank, a subsidiary of Anglo-South African conglomerate, Old Mutual, said its diluted headline earnings per share rose 4.8 per cent to 2,350 cents in 2016, the slowest pace of growth since 2009 when its EPS fell by nearly a third. Headline EPS is the main measure of profit in South Africa as it strips out certain one-off items.

Nedbank also said its results were affected by slack demand for loans as slowing economic growth and higher interest rates hit consumption and investment spending across Africa.
Brown forecast at least 7 per cent growth in 2017 annual headline EPS, saying a peak in interest rate cycle in South Africa would lift demand or loans.
Old Mutual is in the middle of an overhaul in which it will carve itself into four parts and cut its 54 per cent stake in Nedbank to a minority holding to simplify its structure.
Nedbank competes with Standard Bank, FirstRand, Barclays Africa and Capitec.

QuotableQuote: Seized Tyres

"I understand that the Federal Government through the Standards Organization of Nigeria has seized several millions of substandard tyres worth about 5 billion Naira from some dubious Chinese business men. As an environmentalist, I am worried about how these tyres will be disposed. We can't burn that number of tyres because it will have severe negative consequences for the environment. Maybe, there may be a diplomatic angle to whole thing. On a second thought, Honorable Minister, we in Abia can be of help here. Let them bring those tyres to Aba and our boys at Port Harcourt Road will use them to produce several items like fan belts, conveyor belts, etc which can be sold at very good prices".

Oh Great, Bed Bugs Can Kill You

If you’ve had bed bugs, you know that the damage they inflict is largely psychological. Yes, they feed on human blood, and if you are allergic the bite marks they leave can blow up to painful welts, but long after you’ve healed, long after they’ve been exterminated from your living space, their presence lingers. Any piece of black lint becomes a reason to drop everything and scrutinize to make sure they didn’t return; any communal space outside your home can inflict paranoia as a potential spot where you may pick them up. Unlike other household pests, bed bugs aren’t known as significant disease carriers (they don’t typically travel far or at all once they find a host and thus tend to feed on relatively few humans). Their presence is their primary infliction.
