Police Arraign Tailor Over Alleged Theft Of Jeep, Escape From Custody
A 37-year-old Lagos-based tailor, Ojo Adegboyega, who allegedly stole a jeep and also escaped from lawful custody, was on Saturday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
The accused, who resides at No.8, Olowoshola St., Onipanu, Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of
conspiracy, stealing and escape from lawful custody.
According to the prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, the accused with others still at large committed the offences at 4.20 a.m. on Dec.18, 2013 at No. 35, Abeokuta St., Bariga, Lagos.
He told the court that the accused stole a Honda CRV jeep marked LND 908 BK valued at N900, 000, property of Mr Muri Atanda.
“Adegboyega stole the car from where it was parked in front of Atanda’s house,” Emuerhi alleged.
The prosecutor also alleged that the accused at noon of Dec. 23, 2013 at Ladipo Market, Mushin, Lagos, escaped from lawful custody.
He said the offences contravened Sections 106 (b), 285, and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be sentenced to a three-year imprisonment if convicted.
The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and was released on bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mrs Abimbola Komolafe, said one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused and should possess a landed property in the state.
In addition, she said any of the sureties should produce evidence of three years tax payment in the state.
Further hearing has been fixed for April 10.
