A middle-aged man in Onuoji Umuhuali, Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Olugha Otubo at the weekend died after eating yam he harvested from a forest in the area.
A woman from the area had earlier died after eating the yam specie identified as ‘Iwobo’ by the people of the area.
Otubo had returned from fetching water in the stream when he was
hungry and went to the forest and harvested the yam which he immediately prepared and ate.
Sources in the community told New Telegraph that 30 minutes after
eating the yam, which the people consider as forbidden because of its
nature, Otubo started vomiting bloody substance while his stomach started swelling.
He gave up the ghost 45 minutes later.
Wife of the deceased, Maria Otubo, who is nursing a three-month-old
baby explained that she warned her husband not to eat the yam but he refused to heed her warning.
She disclosed that over two bottles of red oil were poured onto her husband’s stomach by sympathisers to revive him but to no avail.
