Youthful entrepreneur and top socialite, Abiodun Onasanya popularly known as Abbey Onas was recently arraigned before the Lagos State Chief Magistrate Court 2, Ikeja over charges of assault committed at an event held on October 11, 2014 at the Grandeur Event Center, Ikeja, Lagos.
Presided over by Magistrate A. O. Komolafe, Abbey Onas was accused of unlawfully assaulting one Mr Idowu Salawu by slapping him on his face, an offence the court termed punishable under section 170 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State.
According to Barr. Tunde Kalaro in his address, “this matter wouldn’t have gotten to this level but for Abbey Onas' 'unremorseful' act and display of arrogance. As at when the matter was reported at the police station; and having been presented with evidences of his physical assault on Mr Salawu, courtesy demands of him to simply offer an apology and let go off the matter but he insisted and even boasted that the police should take the matter to anywhere; that he is ready for them…even the court of law!”
In his defense, Abbey Onas, who is an in - law to All Progressive Alliance (APC) National Legal Adviser, Muiz Banire and a toast of many fuji and juju artistes on the social scene denied ever seeing or knowing the complainant; that he was surprised to receive a court summon over assault. “Honestly, I don’t know the complainant, I am not aware of any assault incident on the day he is referring to and I can’t remember ever assaulting anybody. The only thing I could remember is that trouble started when I was about leaving while my security aides made efforts to create a safe passage for me”.
Investigations by our reporter later revealed that Abbey Onas allegedly assaulted Mr Salawu at Grandeur Events Center. According to a staff of the event management outfit who claimed anonymity, in a brief chat described the incident as very shocking and shameful. “Our guests were actually about leaving when a fight broke out. In the process of trying to make peace amongst them, Abbey Onas and his entourage of policemen suddenly and aggressively appeared while his security aides forcefully ordered people to make way for their boss. In the process of doing this, they increased their intimidation; and the next thing I saw was Abbey Onas slapping our guest, Mr Salawu across the face”.
In her ruling, Magistrate A. O. Komolafe adjourned the case to December 10, 2014.
