Kwara State has emerged the
champion of the maiden edition of North Central Zone Athletics
Championship with a total of nine gold, five silver and two bronze
medals.
The one day athletics championship which was powered by the 1st vice
President, Athletics Federation of Nigeria , Alhaji Tunde AbdulKareem
featured athletes from Kwara, Benue, Plateau, Niger states and FCT who
competed for cash rewards and honours in different categories.
The event was held at the Main Bowl of the state stadium.
Benue came second with three gold, four silver and two bronze medals
while Plateau occupied the third position with one silver and five
bronze medals.
Kogi and the FCT both jointly occupied the fourth position with silver
and a bronze medal each.
Niger which occupied the bottom of the medals table only managed a
bronze medal.
Speaking at the occasion, the 1st vice President, Athletics Federation
of Nigeria, (AFN), Alhaji Tunde AbdulKareem, the championship was
aimed at discovering more talents for future events.
He appreciated the state government, sports council and the athletes
for their support and participation, noting that he would continue to
support sports development in the State and the Country.
