RIVERS state government has denied allegations that the Majority Leader of the state House of Assembly, Hon Chidi Lloyd was arrested by the Police on his way to fly in the same jet with governor Chibuike Amaechi.
A press statement issued yesterday and signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Dave Iyofor said Hon Lloyd was arrested in his house before his family members and lawyers.
The Police had in a press statement issued Thursday night alleged that Hon Lloyd escaped from a hospital and was on his way to fly in the same jet with the governor when he was arrested. The Police statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO in the state, DSP Ahmad Muhammad alleged that the lawmaker was to have escaped from the law if he had joined the governor in that jet.
The statement said the lawmaker was arrested over the alleged murder of a Police sergeant Urang Obediah and a member of the Felix Obuah faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP who hailed from the same Emohua local government area with the lawmaker, Mr Kingsley Ejeuo.
The statement which described the late Ejeuo as the lawmaker’s arch political rival in the local government said the lawmaker knocked the two of them down with his vehicle. According to the statement, Hon Lloyd after knocking down the Police officer still sped ahead to crush the late Ejeuo who was in a Passat car.
Meantime, the state government has described the statement issued by the Police as a distorted account of the circumstance surrounding the arrest of the lawmaker stressing that it was an attempt to deceive the reading public.
Shocked, several calls were put across to CP Mbu that were not answered.
CP Mbu later showed up and when the governor asked him, he denied giving such an order. He then went on and on, making a baseless, noisy argument that no one could comprehend.
Governor Amaechi put it to him that he(Mbu) came to search the plane for Chidi Llyod and told him to go ahead and search the plane. Mbu continued to talking endlessly, showing absolutely no respect or regard for the office of the Governor of Rivers State who is the Chief Security Officer of the State.
Governor Amaechi then called the Inspector-General(IG) of Police and while the governor was speaking with the IGP on phone, CP Mbu was shouting at the governor, on top of his voice, trying to disrupt the conversation between the Governor and the IGP to the shock and disbelief of those that were there.
It was when Governor Amaechi arrived Abuja later in the evening of yesterday that he was informed that Hon Chidi Lloyd was arrested in his(Lloyd’s) house in the presence of his family and lawyer.
Meanwhile counsel to embattled leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Bar Emenike Ebete says the allegation of murder leveled against his client by the Police was another attempt to destroy him. Bar Ebete said his client did not drive the said vehicle, adding that Hon. Lloyd was arrested in his house that Thursday night.
