NIGERIAN LAW MAKERS VOW TO PROTECT JEGA FROM SACK

The lawmakers of the House of Representatives vowed to prevent the sack of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Attahiru Jega.

After Jega’s announcement of the elections postponement on February 7, rumours started circulating that the federal government were plotting to remove Jega from his current position.
It was alleged that Jonathan was not happy with Jega’s post-announcement speech, feeling that the speech had negatively affected the credibility of the presidency and of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The House of Representatives however, vowed to stop any such move by the presidency.
Speaking on the issue, the House spokesman, Hon Zakari Muhammed, said:
“When we resume, we’ll look at the decision of INEC to postpone the elections and against any plan to send Jega on a terminal leave.
“Of course, that cannot happen. We will take a farreaching decision for the good of the country.”

Officially, Jega’s tenure expires on June 13. The rumoured plan is to remove him from the position before the elections, scheduled for March 28 and April 11, under the disguise of a 3 months terminal leave which should commence on the 1st of March.
