CJN Breaks Silence on Arrested Justices...Says DSS' Actions Regrettable

NBA Rejects Presidency's Justification, Says Action Unconstitutional 
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mahmud Mohammed has appealed to Nigerians to be calm over last weekend's unprecedented arrest of two of his colleagues at the Supreme Court and other judges of lower cadre.

The CJN who broke his silence on this issue in Abuja on the occasion of the valedictory session held in honour of a retired Supreme Court Justice, Justice Suleiman Galadima, said he was saddened by the event.

"My lords, invited guests, ladies and gentlemen, not to detract from this occasion, it is indeed very saddened and deeply regrettable, the distressing and unfortunate incident which occurred on Friday 7 October and Saturday 8 October 2016”.

"However, I must appeal to all Nigerians to remain calm and prayerful, as an emergency meeting of the National Judicial Council (NJC) will take place tomorrow to comprehensively look into the matter”.

"I must express my sincere appreciation to the executive of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) ably led by the president, Abubakar Mahmoud, SAN and indeed all members of the legal professions, for their prompt action and continued support."

Although it is traditional for the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to attend such valedictory session, the incumbent AGF, Abubakar Malami, SAN, was conspicuously absent. Neither did he send a representative. 

Speaking at the event, NBA President insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari should call the security agencies responsible for the arrest of the judges to order.

He said: “We viewed these actions as illegal and unconstitutional and a threat to the independence of the judiciary and must be aimed at intimidating the judiciary and the legal profession”.

“These military style operations are totally unacceptable in a democratic society. They are unacceptable against private citizens but even more against serving justices of superior courts”.

Mahmoud said the NBA rejects the explanations and justification by the presidency that these so called surgical operations were targeted at corruption and not the judiciary.

"We find it absurd that the presidency will accept assurances from DSS that it followed due process of the law”.

“We maintain our position that these operations are illegal and unconstitutional. I want to reiterate that the position of the NBA is not aimed at protecting any judge. We are not also shielding any judges from investigation from charges of corruption”.

He also addressed the divisions among lawyers over the arrests and raids of the judges’ houses in the middle of the night by masked armed men.

“We do not accept it. This portends real danger to the Nigerian democracy. It is contrary to all civilised norms and accepted standards”.

He called on DSS to restrict itself to its constitutional and statutory duties as according to him, DSS core mandate is to guaranteeing internal national security. 

"It is not its duty to conduct police investigation or arraign and prosecute cases of corruption. It is not its responsibility to conduct sting operations on judges for corruption or professional misconduct in the middle of the night," he added.

He called on the CJN to immediately take necessary and urgent steps to set in motion the process of cleansing the system.

He said: “Urgent steps to restore confidence of the Nigerian people in the nation's judiciary”.

He called on lawyers to remain resolute and speak with one voice, adding, “this is not the time to be divided”.

Why We Are Supporting NESG -Sterling Bank

 

Sterling Bank Plc has renewed its commitment to the promotion of Made-In-Nigeria goods and services as it supports the 2016 edition of the Nigerian Economic Summit (NES#22). The summit themed ‘Made in Nigeria’ is scheduled to hold from October 10 to 12, 2016 at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

 

Sterling Bank in a statement made available to newsmen in Lagos at the weekend assured that it would continue to invest in and partner with like minds to promote the production and consumption of locally made goods and services adding that its sponsorship is also hinged on the fact that the event would provide a platform for public-private dialogue (PPD) to fashion out the right economic agenda to take the nation out of the current economic downturn.

 

It would be recalled that the Bank has remained consistent in the  promotion of Made-in-Nigeria products. Recently, Sterling Bank sponsored the Made-In-Nigeria week held in Lagos. The Bank is also in partnership with Innoson Motors Limited to finance the purchase of locally made vehicles produced by the company. In addition, Sterling Bank financed Labana Rice,  one of the largest rice mill in the country and also bought large quantity for staff and stakeholders in the Bank. Driving this initiative down to her staff, the Bank has instituted a ‘Made - in- Nigeria Week’ when staff come to the office dressed in locally made attires.

 

Held annually, NES attracts over a thousand delegates including chief executives, opinion leaders and policy level managers from the public and private sectors to interact and share thoughts on issues of national importance.

 

The Bank in the statement explained that its strategic support for the promotion of was informed by the current economic headwinds and exchange rate volatility fueled by the fall in oil price which brought to the fore, the need to diversify the nation’s revenue base and support the manufacturing sector through the patronage and use of locally made products and services.

 

Also, the Bank noted that the patronage of local manufacturers would boost the local economy adding that this partnership was one of the numerous projects the Bank is embarking on to enrich the lives of Nigerians.

 

The Bank said: “The country’s dependence on oil exports for foreign exchange and the global oil sector downturn driven by the falling oil price has led to much talked about economic recession in the country and has negatively impacted other sectors with prices of imported products rising significantly.

 

“For the country to get out of this situation, there is an urgent need to diversify the economy and empower the manufacturing sector. But the manufacturing sector will not thrive if they are not patronized by Nigerians”.

 

While acknowledging that the challenges facing the economy also provide a platform for proactive companies to seize the opportunity to promote indigenous products and local substitutes, the Bank called on the Federal Government to provide the necessary infrastructure to encourage the establishment of manufacturing companies in the country as well as put in place a tax regime that would encourage foreign direct investment.

Saraki: Gov Ahmed commends FG

Kwara State Governor, Dr Abdulfatah Ahmed has commended the Federal Government for withdrawing the forgery charges against the Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweramadu.

 

Governor Ahmed in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Abdulwahab Oba, says the withdrawal of the charges was proper, necessary and timely.

 

According to him, “the withdrawal provides a vista of opportunity for national cohesion and a platform for synergy between the executive and the legislative arms of government”.

 

Gov Ahmed expressed the hope that the federal government will take other appropriate similar actions so that all hands will be on deck in the task of moving Nigeria forward.

 

The Governor emphasised effective legislative and executive arms cordial relationship as a precursor to the delivery of good governance to the citizenry.

 

TROOPS ARREST BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS

In what could be described as bumper harvest in the wave of arrests of escaping and infiltrating remnants of Boko Haram terrorists in the north east, troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE with assistance of Civilian JTF, have arrested quite a number in Maiduguri and Mafa. 

Yesterday afternoon, at Kasuwar Shanu (Cattle Market), one Abur Modu Magaji was apprehended by Civilian JTF and handed  over to troops. Preliminary investigation shows that he admitted to rustling 45 cows from Saleh Mohamed with 20 other Boko Haram terrorists at gun point. He however cooperated and assisted in pointing out 7 other suspected terrorists at Mafa road checkpoint. The 3 suspects Ibrahim Chari, Bulama Magaji and Nde Ngude were positively identified as Boko Haram terrorists group members that he had operated with in the past, while 4 others; Mustafa Fannami, Abubakakar Modu, Mohammed Merai and Abur Mustafa bought cows from him out of the stolen animals. 

Similarly, Bakura Agwala, Jatau Yaga and Umar Modu were arrested at a checkpoint along Maiduguri-Mafa road by troops with the assistance of Civilian JTF. The suspects also confessed that they were involved in attacks and livestock rustling. 

Additionally, at about 5.00pm yesterday, troops also arrested Abacha Umar and Umar Babagana at Cattle Market. Preliminary investigation shows that the suspects were from Bama and had participated in various Boko Haram terrorists attacks and cattle rustling. The suspects have been handed over to Joint Investigation Committee, while 18 recovered cows  have been handed over to the Cattle Market Committee for screening and identification and subsequent hand over to their rightful owners. 

FALSE ALERT! RICE IMPORTS REMAIN BANNED THROUGH THE LAND BORDERS

Our attention has been drawn to publications on various online platforms indicating that the Nigeria Customs Service has reversed the ban on Rice importation through the land borders. These reports were attributed to a press interview purportedly granted by the Service Public Relations Officer, Deputy-Comptroller Wale Adeniyi.

It has become necessary to re-state the true position in view of the confusion which these online publications may create in the industry. It is even more expedient to provide this clarification given that the fact that the Service has taken a firm position earlier in the week through a joint press conference with Stakeholders.

First, we like to reiterate the position that importation of Rice remains banned through our Land Borders, and we have the commitment of Partner Government Agencies and Stakeholders to enforce this restriction. While this restriction is in force, Rice imports through the Ports are still allowed subject to payment of extant charges.

It is equally important to restate the
confidence of the Nigeria Customs Service in the ability of Nigerian Rice Producers to fill the existing sufficiency gaps in the supply of the product. The Service has noted with satisfaction the ongoing Rice Revolution undertaken by many State Governments, and Strategic Interventions by Federal Government Agencies. The Service is convinced that the bumper harvests expected from these efforts will address the supply gap in 2017. It is our belief that continuous waste of scarce forex on a commodity that can be produced locally makes no economic sense, most especially at a period of recession. The Service will therefore advocate a total Ban on Rice Importation into Nigeria with effect from 2017.

It is worrisome that the publications that resurfaced this weekend were being attributed to a Press interview granted in October 2015. We strongly suspect that some powerful forces behind Rice Smuggling are at work, recycling an old report under a different circumstance to create confusion. We urge Nigerians to watch out for similar antics as the firm stand on Rice smuggling will pitch their selfish interest against our national interest.
