Digital switch over takes off in Nigeria, June —NBC

The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Thursday, announced that the country’s first switch off from analogue terrestrial television system onto digital will take place in Nigeria by June 17, this year.

However, the commission has chosen Jos, Plateau State, as the first city to begin the switch off.
Director-General of the commission, Mr. Emeka Mba, who revealed this to journalists in Abuja, Thursday, said that the choice of Jos was because of its compact nature and fair housing of numerous government and privately broadcasting stations.
Mba said the development was in strict adherence to the resolutions reached at its broadcast summit in October 2013, where an important road-map was set for achieving the country’s deadline for digital switch over, DSO, by December 31, 2014.
Noting that the summit, the Digiteam put in place for the actualization of the mandate had been working tirelessly he expressed happiness that a positive light has appeared at the end of the day.
He dded that the commission was also working on getting signal distributors on board to kick start the new system immediately. The commission, according to him, was also working on the passage of enabling laws that would help the smooth running of digital transmission, as well as collaborations with other government agencies and relevant bodies to ensure success.
