Nigerian Police Drop Threat to Popstar 2Baba Over Planned Protest

Nigerian police have rescinded a threat to block a protest organized by a popular singer who has organized a march against the economic conditions in the West African country.

Innocent Ujah Idibia, better known by his stage name of 2face Idibia or 2Baba, posted a video on his Facebook page on Tuesday, calling for a nationwide march.

Demonstrations are due to take place at the National Stadium in Lagos, the country’s most populous city, and in the capital Abuja, on February 6. Idibia’s video has been viewed more than 300,000 times and shared over 12,000 times, and has been endorsed by many Nigerians on social media.

Nigeria’s economy in recession after a drop in oil output in 2016 and numerous security challenges are confronting the country, including the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast, which has left more than 2 million people displaced.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, had warned the singer that the marches would not be allowed to go ahead and said that “hoodlums are planning to hijack” the peaceful protest.

“We know that [Idibia] does not have the capacity to contain such a crowd and we will not fold our hands and watch while things go out of hand,” said Owoseni, according to Nigerian newspaper Vanguard.

The newspaper also reported that the singer could be arrested if the protests go ahead.

On Friday, however, the Nigerian federal government tweeted that it “fully upholds the constitutional right of Nigerians to peaceful assembly and association.”

An activist group helping to organize the protests, Enough is Enough Nigeria (EiE Nigeria), also tweeted that the Nigerian police had said they would now allow the protests to go ahead.

Idibia has won multiple awards, including a MOBO in 2007 in the Best African Act category, and is very popular in Nigeria. He proposed a nationwide demonstration earlier in January, an unusual foray into politics for a Nigerian entertainer.

In the video, Idibia said that the march would be peaceful and would aim to draw attention to social problems in Nigeria, including lack of security, government corruption and the high cost of living. “This march is about demanding that our leaders connect with all the people of Nigeria,” he said.

The country’s economy has dipped since Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari came to power in 2015, in large part due to the global fall in commodity prices. The situation was exacerbated in Nigeria in 2016, however, when militant groups in the oil-rich Niger Delta took up arms and blew up oil pipelines in protest at what they claim is the unfair distribution of the country’s natural resources. Nigeria’s economy is heavily dependent upon oil and the country is one of Africa’s biggest oil producers. The country lost almost $5 billion in revenue as a result of the attacks, according to Maikanti Baru, the director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

Nigerians also experience frequent fuel shortages, partly down to the country’s limited capacity to refine its own oil. Buhari opted to remove a currency peg on the Nigerian naira in June 2016, which had kept the currency at 197 naira to one U.S. dollar. The value of the naira has since fluctuated and Nigeria continues to battle a foreign exchange shortage.

Coca-Cola Plus: New Coke with fibre could be healthiest yet

Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Coke Life - Coca-Cola is on a continuous mission to make its soft drinks healthier.

The latest in the list, however, is seriously unusual. Coca-Cola Plus is essentially Coke with added fibre.

Going on sale in Japan this March, the drink is sugar and calorie-free and contains contains five grams of indigestible dextrin, which was created as a supplement for people with fibre deficiencies.
Coca-Cola Plus was actually first launched years ago but was taken off the shelves. Now, it’s back. And Diet Coke addicts are rejoicing.

Some people are calling it the healthiest Coke variant ever and there’s a lot of excitement about the claim that the fibre could reduce fat absorption from food, if drunk whilst eating.

In fact, Coca-Cola Plus is being marketed as the first Coke drink that actively improves your health.
What’s more, according to Coca-Cola, drinking one bottle a day with meals will help control the levels of triglycerides in the blood after eating.

The drink is being targeted at over-40s who still crave Coca-Cola flavour but no longer want to consume so many unhealthy drinks.

But how good it tastes remains to be seen.

Reviewing Coca-Cola Plus’ previous incarnation nearly seven years ago, CNN wrote: “Coca-Cola Plus Fiber is like drinking an ultra-sweet cola-flavoured jelly with a heavy dose of faux citrus and a biting carbonation.

“A remote high-five to anyone who can finish a whole bottle and eat another meal that day.”
They said the fibre makes the texture of the drink much thicker than that of usual Coke, and “the gooiness sticks in your throat like milk.”

So perhaps its health claims won’t be enough to offset a less than pleasant drinking experience.

Why Police sealed Nigerian private station, Core TV, others

The security operatives who sealed the Abuja office of a cable and satellite broadcaster, CoreTV, early Friday morning were not from the State Security Service, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.
The operatives were from the Mobile Unit of the Police, witnesses said, out to enforce a quit notice arising from a land dispute decided by the Supreme Court.
Evacuated properties from Core TV station and other business offices at U.L.O Building Sokode Crescent, Wuse Zone 5
Evacuated properties from Core TV station and other business offices at U.L.O Building Sokode Crescent, Wuse Zone 5
Workers had arrived the television station along Sokode Crescent, Zone 5, Wuse in Abuja on Friday morning to discover their offices broken into and their broadcasting and other equipment allegedly carted away.

Following the discovery, Olajide Adediran, the Managing Director of CoreTV, had told PREMIUM TIMES that the operatives had shut down the station and barricaded the area during the operation around 4:00 a.m. Friday, even though the media house had no history with the secret police.

But it later emerged that the broadcast media organisation was caught in a dispute over the land on which the building housing its rented office was constructed.

Three buildings, including the plaza where CoreTV had its offices, were sealed in execution of the quit notice.

A cameraman with CoreTV, Adeniyi Adeshina, told PREMIUM TIMES that the operatives arrived the location with some hoodlums and evacuated the properties in their building.

“I left office at about 10 p.m. last night without any sign of a quit notice. At about 6:a.m when I assumed duty today, I saw a notice on the building’s main entrance stating that we should evacuate the building within 12 hours of the notice,” Mr. Adeshina said.

It is not clear why the police did not give adequate notice to the occupants of the building before the eviction and why their properties had to be broken into, damaged and stolen.

The dispute over the land had been on since 1996 until it was decided by the Supreme Court.
Apart from the U.L.O Plaza in which CoreTV had its offices, two other buildings occupied by several businesses were forcibly evacuated on Friday.

The exercise led to damages to the buildings and loss of valuable items in the offices and business centres located in them.

MEDIA NOT PRIMARY TARGET
Mr. Adediran also confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES Friday evening that CoreTV was only caught in the controversy of a long-standing dispute over the ownership of the property amongst two different landlords.

He also confirmed that police officers conducted the raid and not operatives of the State Security Service as he had earlier stated.

“A few witnesses around the neighbourhood told me that the men were from the SSS,” Mr. Adediran said. “Unfortunately, that turned out not to be accurate.”

“They’re actually police officers and acted based on a court order that granted one of the parties fighting over the property the power to possess it,” he added.

Mr. Adediran said his medium was not the primary target.

Core TV raid and others (29)

“No, we’re not being particularly targeted,” he said. “This is because other offices in the premises were raided and their items also taken away.”

But he expressed strong reservations about the timing of the police action.

“It was clearly not properly timed. They should not have done this in the dead of the night.”

Mr. Adeniran told PREMIUM TIMES the police moved computers, digital cameras, and other files from his offices during the operation, which took place around 4:00 a.m. Friday.

When contacted, the Abuja Police spokesman, Anjuguri Mamza, said he was not aware of the raid.

BISHOP CHRIS KWAKPOVWE TAKES THE LEAD WITH ODM (OUR DAILY MANNA) 2017 ANNUAL WORLD ANOINTING NIGHT

The annual INTERDENOMINATIONAL night vigil organised by Our Daily Manna Prayer Ministry every January is usually power-packed because the vigil holds after the 21 days fasting of the ministry and its members. The 2017 edition tagged NIGHT OF EVIDENCE, was no different, if anything, it was stupendously powerful. The event held at the Tafawa Balewa Square Lagos, on 27thJanuary and as usual the gathering recorded a huge turnout of people consisting of hundreds of thousands. The arena was exciting, expectant and eventful as the hundreds of thousands of non-denominational members praised and worshipped God in humility, whilst raising their different prayer points to Heaven for a miracle.

The various testimonies of miraculous healings, childbirths, financial breakthroughs were given by members of the congregation, testifying of God’s miraculous goodness in their lives, the Manna Voices Choir, the Children Orchestra group, several praise and worship ministrations and the ‘War Against Haman’ prayer sessions, all heralded the welcome speech which was given by Pastor Flora Kwakpovwe, the wife of the Bishop. She prayed as well as welcomed the various Manna Mountains (INTERDENOMINATIONAL) across the world, before introducing her husband, Bishop Dr Chris Kwakpovwe to the altar.

When Bishop Dr Chris Kwakpovwe started speaking, he notified the crowd of the strict security screenings because of the plans of some people to cause stampede in the event. He enjoined the crowd that they should look up to Jesus and see Him all the way instead of him a mere mortal in preparations for their breakthroughs and deliverances that night. The Bishop also prayed for Nigeria and the three tiers of government. He prayed especially for the Vice President of Nigeria Prof Yemi Osinabjo. He also announced that the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode and his wife sent individual representatives to the event. He called on Mrs Folashade Adekoya, the Head of Service who was there on behalf of Gov. Ambode to read Ambode's goodwill message, and she was followed by Mrs Joke Adeyemi who represented Mrs Ambode's message.

Then came the preaching of the WORD by Bishop Dr Chris Kwakpowve, followed by strong Prophetic Declarations as well as onstage deliverances of people from various levels of afflictions and challenges. It was a night of instant healings, wonders and salvations. At the end of the event, the lives of the congregation who came from over 100 countries were transformed and there was EVIDENCE that they have been in God’s presence and experienced Him in His fullness.

It would be recalled that Bishop Dr Chris Kwakpovwe was also honoured recently with an Award (DELTA ICON) in Delta State for his contribution to Christiandom and the marvellous INSPIRATION his daily devotional book OUR DAILY MANNA is doing in the lives of people all over the world.

More feathers are also on the offing and we will sure keep you updated, while you watch out for his various yearly activities. He can be seen one on one via a text to this number: +234 818-644 9126.

These includes name-dropping, claiming that they were sent to solicit for assistance or patronage using the name and photographs of the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General TY Buratai to create various social media accounts with the intent of currying favours and financial assistance, amongst other tricks.

The Nigerian Army wishes to make it emphatically clear that at no time has the Lieutenant General TY Buratai solicited for funds and  assistance through individuals, groups and any of the social media platforms.

In view of this, members of the general public are therefore enjoined to be wary of such persons or groups and social  media accounts in the name of the Chief of Army Staff. Efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend such persons.

AMBODE AWARDS CONTRACTS FOR REVONATION OF 174 CLASSROOMS, 8 NEW BLOCKS

…Lays Foundation Of New Model School In Ojo
Lagos State Governor Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday said his administration has awarded contract for the construction of eight new blocks of classrooms as well as the renovation of 174 existing blocks of classrooms and the construction of perimeter fence in various schools to enhance security.
The Governor, who spoke at the Foundation Laying ceremony of the New Model School in Awori College, Ojo, said the government has also commenced the supply of over 40,000 students’ furnitures on a quarterly basis to clear the identified shortfall of 160,000.
Governor Ambode, who was represented at the ceremony by his Deputy, Dr. Mrs. Oluranti Adebule expressed optimism that the sustained efforts of his administration to improve on the quality of teaching and learning environment would positively impact on the performance of students.
He noted that performance of students in the last West African Examination Council (WAEC) conducted examination was most assuring and an indication that the State was moving in the right direction.
The Governor said, “Today we are introducing a new model of block of classrooms in our public secondary schools. This edifice, apart from aiding teaching and learning, will compare favourably with high school structures in leading countries of the world.
“Apart from the aesthetics value, the new structure is capable of enhancing security of students, staff and schools materials in the face of the recent security breaches in our schools. It would comprise 36 classrooms, library, staff rooms, multipurpose hall, laboratories, principal/Vice Principal’s offices and modern toilet facilities for both junior and senior schools.”
He assured students in the State that his administration was committed to building a future of great opportunities, possibilities and prosperity through the provision of qualitative education that is consistent with the demands of the 21stcentury.
He enjoined the students to embrace the opportunities being provided by showing serious commitment to their studies and shun all negative values that could hinder their dreams.
“Let me assure all parents that we will continue to do our very best to ensure that our schools are safe from intruders. We have put in place measures to secure our pupils, students, teaching and non teaching staff. Our standards are high and we will continue to make them better,” the Governor said.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, said that the words and actions of Governor Ambode about education has spoken loud and in unequivocal terms about his passion to ensure the provision of high quality education that is accessible to all learners through effective and efficient management of resources for the attainment of self reliance and socio- economic development.
Also, Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Hon. Lanre Ogunyemi, urged residents to appreciate the government’s prompt response to anything that has to do with education and future development of youths in the State, adding that the priority being accorded education in the state, particularly by the Ambode-led administration cannot but be applauded.
He said though other states of the federation find it difficult to pay teachers’ salary, the reverse was the case in Lagos as Governor Ambode pays salaries of staff, teachers inclusive on the 22nd of every month.
“This present administration recently employed more that 1,300 teachers and is about employing another 1,000. All these and other achievements were made possible due to good managers and able lieutenants at the helm of affairs as far as education is concerned,” Ogunyemi said.

Lorry driver Vadim Kondratyuk had complained of toothache when he set off for New York from his home in California on 17 January.

After making it part of the way home, the 26-year-old was in so much pain his brother took him to hospital in Utah, where doctors said the infection had spread to his lungs.

His condition quickly deteriorated and he died on Monday with his wife by his side.

Mr Kondratyuk leaves behind two daughters, two-year-old Vanessa and 11-month-old Maya.

“It’s going to be hard with both my kids without a husband,” said Ms Kondratyuk. “Half of me is just taken away.”

Ambode okays death penalty for kidnappers

…Gov’s Assent Direct Response To Kidnapping, Says Speaker

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday signed into law the anti-kidnapping bill recently passed by the State House of Assembly, with a pledge to ensure its full implementation to eradicate kidnapping once and for all in the State.

The Prohibition of the Act of Kidnapping Law imposes a penalty of life imprisonment on kidnapping for ransom. The law also stipulates that where a victim dies in the course of kidnap, the suspect is liable on conviction to death.

Speaking at the signing ceremony held at Lagos House in Ikeja, Governor Ambode said the spate of kidnapping in the State had gotten to a level that required decisive action from government, hence the need for the enactment of the law to send serious message to perpetrators of such heinous crime.
He said aside the enactment of the law, the State Government was also putting in place appropriate measures particularly in the schools and other vulnerable targets to prevent kidnapping and other security breaches.

The Governor said: “Security is of utmost importance to our administration and we are confident that this law will serve as a deterrent to anybody who may desire to engage in this wicked act within the boundaries of Lagos.

“Why we use this law to address the challenge and punish the criminals, we are also putting in place appropriate measures particularly in our schools and other vulnerable targets to prevent security breaches and it is important that we ensure that everything we do in respect of this anti-kidnapping law is in good faith and good spirit to eradicate the issue of kidnapping once and for all in the State.”
Governor Ambode assured that the justice system would be activated to execute the anti-kidnapping law to the letter to ensure that any criminal caught is subjected to the full wrath of the law.

The Governor, at the ceremony, also signed the Sports Trust Fund Bill and the Sports Commission bill into law, explaining that the laws were enacted to address key issues bordering on security and effectively harnessing the potentials in the sports sector.

Giving insight on the laws, Governor Ambode said: “The Sport Commission Law will give legal backing to the formulation and implementation of sport policies in the State while the Sport Trust Fund will enable government to raise money for the development of sporting facilities and activities.

“This fund will provide a platform where the State Government can enter into partnership with the private sector to finance sports infrastructure, tournaments and programmes which will in turn create employment and generate revenue for the State.”

He added that as provided for in the law, a Board of Trustees comprising all stakeholders in the sports community would soon be inaugurated for the Trust Fund, saying that with the law, government was restating its commitment to scale up sports development and make the State the hub of sports in Nigeria.

He also appreciated members of the Lagos State House of Assembly for their efforts in the enactment of the laws.

In his remarks, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, said the signing of the bills into law by the Governor was a clear testimony of the commitment of the State Government to the security of citizens and sports development.

Obasa, who was represented by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon Sanai Agunbiade, said it was particularly gratifying to note that the anti-kidnapping law was an all-encompassing one which prescribes punishment for the actual actors, those that collaborate, aid and abet and those who see the act of kidnapping being perpetrated and do nothing about it, as well as confiscation of properties attached to the heinous crime of kidnapping.

He said the passage and signing of the law was a direct response and responsiveness of the government to the spate of kidnapping in the State, adding that the expansive provisions in the law would, in no long distant future, ensure the eradication of the menace in the State.

On the bills on sports, the Speaker said: “We are happy that Lagos State is taking a very bold step at ensuring that sporting activities get a boost from the government and this is a clear demonstration to the people of Lagos State and Nigeria that the State Government is paying adequate attention to sporting activities.”
