Oya Festival 2016: Why Women Must Emulate Oya Virtues-Otunba Gani Adams

TEXT OF SPEECH DELIVERED BY THE CHIEF PROMOTER, OLOKUN FESTIVAL FOUNDATION, OTUNBA DR GANI ADAMS DURING THE 2016 EDITION OF THE OYA FESTIVAL HELD TODAY FRIDAY 25TH OF NOVEMBER 2016. 

 

 It is another wonderful opportunity to acknowledge you all for your supports to our festivals.

 

Let me begin by welcoming you to another edition of the Oya Festival, one of our efforts to propagate and promote the Yoruba Cultural Heritage.

 

This is the fourth edition of this programme, I want to say thank you to all of us, who started this journey together.

 

I also want to appreciate those who joined the train and have continued the journey with us.

 

More than ever, it is very important to appreciate your supports and contribution, especially, when we consider the harsh economic situation in the country.

 

Your invaluable time and resources have continued to propel us to this height.

 

During the last year celebration of the Oya Festival, the reality of the present economic situation was yet to fully dawn on us.

 

Things have become more difficult since then but we have remained resolute and committed to promote the Yoruba culture.

 

The concept of Omoluabi is a Yoruba value that I cherish regenerate.We have continued to uphold the Omoluabi concept with our continuous gathering to promote the Yoruba deities,legends,spirits gods and heritage .

 

There is no gain saying that Oya remains a very important goddess of the Yoruba race.

 

Oya is a quintessential woman of virtue   as we continue to remember Sango, the role of Oya in the god of Thunder's success cannot in anyway be over emphasized.

 

What usually comes to people’s  mind, when they hear Ira is Oya .

 

It is so because the heritage has added to the historical tourism.

 

To many people, Oya symbolizes Ira, There is nothing too big to celebrate a heritage of this magnitude.

 

Among the virtues of Oya, which our women of nowadays should emulate is her supportive attribute History tells us of the support that Oya gave to Sango to ensure a successful reign.

 It is a Common saying that ' To every successful man, there must be a woman‘.

 

Oya was no doubt behind the heroic success of Sango.

 

Oya symbolizes, what a good mother should be, not just to your children but to younger women around you.

 

Those of us, who have read a little thing about Sango can attest to the motherly role of Oya, even to Sango’s other wives.

 

She played the role of a mother to all members of the kingdom , where her husband reigned .

 

It is also noteworthy to note that apart from just being Sango’s wife like other wives, Oya was herself a very powerful woman. 

 

That however did not stop her from being respectful to her husband and neither did that make her a demy god over other wives.

 

Oya in her days was humility personified, It takes humility to be very powerful and yet be submissive. 

 

Only a few women of today can hide their pride and ego in submission to their husbands, even when the husband is of a lower status and position to the wife.

 

Our years of gathering to promote the Yoruba culture and tradition will not be in vain; if only what we preach and advice are adhered to we have continued to preach to 

 

Yoruba sons and daughters at home and in the Diaspora and we have not stopped advising our traditional rulers and head of government on what to do  

 

Once again, I want to reiterate my call on the Federal Government to look inward and let is find a solution to our problems. 

 

If the past governments had listened to our advice, I am quite sure that there won't be any need for borrowing again.

 

I was very appalled, when I heard the desire of the Federal Government of Nigeria to borrow 30 billion dollars again; my inability to comprehend why we have not harnessed our rich cultural potentials necessitated the surprise.

 

We have said it times without number that we should begin to make big money from tourism.

 

Developed countries like France, England, Brazil and even United Arab Emirate rely on tourism, as their source of revenue. 

 

Other  African countries like, Kenya, South Africa and others have challenged us with the development of their tourism potentials but Nigeria has focused its attention on oil.

 

The dwindling global price of oil should have served as an impetus to propel us to channel more energy to tourism development. 

 

Every year, Saudi Arabia and Israel   make big money through religious tourism; we have the traditional religion in Nigeria. 

 

Why don't we explore the potentials and begin to make foreign currencies from it.

 

Our cultural sites can compete favorably with well known sites all over the world but we have not developed them. 

 

We wait for others to come and develop the sites for us,these are sites that can generate foreign exchange at a time, when the exchange rate for dollar has gone exorbitantly high.

 

We at Olokun Festival Foundation will continue to strive towards ensuring that tourism development is achieved. 

 

We will continue to proffer solutions to the challenges of tourism development in Nigeria.

 

More than ever, Nigeria needs to fully explore tourism potentials instead of looking to borrow money, which may later become a burden on the country whatever we realize from tourism can be added to the earnings from oil, which we have relied on, over the years.

 

I sincerely hope that the Federal government of Nigeria, the various state governors, the local government and corporate organizations will dedicate more efforts towards ensuring tourism development in Nigeria.

Tribute To Late Sir Olanihun Ajayi- Kayode Ajulo

Tribute to One of The Finest Nationalists, Late Sir Olanihun Ajayi,  By Dr. Kayode Ajulo It is usually a thing of shock to come into consciousness that the phenomenon called death is the permanent termination of the biological functions that sustain every mortal.  Watching a peaceful death of a human being reminds us of a falling star; one of a million lights in a vast sky that flares up for a brief moment only to disappear into the endless night forever.  Each time I reflect very deeply, I contemplate the transient nature of human life; I realize that from beginning to end, life is impermanent like an illusion. We have not yet heard of anyone who lived ten thousand years. How fleeting is a lifetime! Today, I am still awestruck as our nation mourns the exit of a national icon, legal giant and one of the chieftains of Afenifere, a pan Yoruba socio-political group, by the name Sir Olaniwun Ajayi; a man of great virtue, indelible milestones and favourable reputation. Infact, as it has been said in times past, “There are no comets seen when beggars die. Even the heavens blaze forth the death of princes.” This popular quote from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar apparently synchronised with the weather in our nation as Sir Ajayi died precisely on Thursday night, November 3, 2016 at the age of 91-years-old. I make bold to say he lived a worthwhile, fruitful, profitable and purposeful life. Putting my memoir together, Sir Olaniwun Ajayi was truly an accomplished lawyer, known for his finesse, astuteness, doggedness and was irrepressible. Baba had penchant for lending his voice to every topical national issues and willing to provide workable solutions that can keep the country together without bias or prejudice. He is truly a quintessential lawyer and for me, it is convenient to call him a social engineer.  Late Olaniwun Ajayi justified this feat when he authored a book entitled, Nigeria: Africa's Failed Asset. The literary work, is a thoughtful, scholarly, well researched and revealing account of the behind-the-scenes moves that led to the creation of Nigeria. The shaky foundation on which the nation is planted in reckless disregard of the settled principles of federalism leading inevitably to the quagmire in which Nigeria finds itself is thoroughly discussed.  The quintessential nonagenarian also offered a permanent solution to the seemingly insolvable problems plaguing the Nigerian state in his book. Obviously these are rare feat worth emulating and indeed commendable. Consequently, Chief unambiguously came, saw and conquered. He was a man of lofty dreams of how our federation should work and he vigorously pursued even painstakingly. Of course like every responsible and visionary fathers, baba also had the dream of his offsprings succeeding and becoming greater than him in life, today he graciously left behind not only a lawyer but a Phd holder in Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Dr Kanyinsola Ajayi.  This is the greatest feat/legacy anyone can be proud of. I feel greatly elated to have a platform like this to celebrate this irredentist national figure of the Yoruba stock. How can I forget so quickly the classical dining room of Sir Olaniwun Ajayi in Isara Remo where in his hospitable nature used to assemble friends and associates after our Afenifere meetings; there was always enough to drink and eat for anyone present.  In a display of sheer humility, Pa Ajayi would personally ensure everyone had the delicacy of their choice ensuring that they were well fed and satisfied. Sir Olaniwun reminds me of Chief Godwin Olusegun Kolawole Ajayi, SAN popularly known by his initials GOK Ajayi; they are men I hold in high esteem even as they are no more with us.  Looking inwards, who in this world can maintain a human form for hundreds of years? There is no knowing about who will die or when death will occur. We depart one after another more quickly than the dewdrops on the roots or the tips of the blades of grasses. So it is said.  Hence, we may have radiant faces in the morning, but by evening we may turn into white ashes. Once the winds of impermanence have blown, our eyes are instantly closed and our breath stops forever.  Then, our radiant face changes its color, and the attractive countenance like peach and plum blossoms is lost. Family and relatives will gather and grieve, but all to no avail, the life we lived in the world subsequently determine our life-after-death whether good or bad.  Farewell Sir Olaniwun Ajayi, a father, grandfather and great grand-father, may your precious soul continue to rest in God’s bosom and may God grant the family you left behind the fortitude to bear this irreparable lose. Sleep on our iconic legal luminary and forthright nationalist. Dr. Kayode Ajulo a lawyer, former National Secretary of Labour Party, is the Principal Partner of Kayode Ajulo & Co. Castle of Law.

Ahead of his grand 70th birthday concert on December 11 tagged, 'Sunny On Sunday', a fresh set of photos of Nigerian music icon, King Sunny Ade has been released.

 

The very stylish photos, taken by the industrious Logor, were released by talent management and event company, Temple Management Company, and portray a side of the juju maestro that has never been seen before.

 

KSA pulled off varying looks and donned a bespoke suit, regal Agbada and even had time to look leisurely in tracksuits.

 

King Sunny Ade has promised to give fans the performance of his life at the concert scheduled to hold at Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. Other acts featuring at the concert include Congolese icon, Awilo Logomba, Onyeka Onwenu, Sir Shina Peters, Darey, Omawumi, Niniola, Terry Apala, Jeff and Tyson Noir.

 

KSA who has been performing on stage for over 50 years will also be honoured as the first Nigerian to join the Hard Rock Hall of Fame at induction ceremony scheduled to hold on Wednesday November 30th at Hard Rock Cafe, Landmark Village, Oniru, Lagos.

Kwara to Build N500m Computer Village

Kwara State Government commitment’s to the expansion of employment opportunities and entrepreneur development has received a boost with the groundbreaking of Harmony Hub (Computer Village) in Ilorin, the state capital by Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed. .

 

Speaking at the groundbreaking, Governor Ahmed said the Computer Village would directly employ about 600 youths when fully operational apart from the hundreds of indirect jobs that would be created in the process of its construction.

 

The Governor noted that the Computer Village which is estimated to cost N500 million  would be funded through contractor financing as well as pre-sales or off-taker arrangements.

 

He noted that Information Communication Technology (ICT) has huge potential of employment generation and empowerment: "Nigeria's ICT sector is reputed as the largest in Africa with $18b investments and 28 per cent internet penetration as of 2013", the governor said. 

 

Governor Ahmed promised that his government would continue to work with the network of investors, and other stakeholders to deepen the supporting infrastructure and ensure that quality standards are maintained across board with a view to accelerating the momentum of the ICT sector in the state.

 

Also speaking, the Chairman, Board of Directors of Harmony Holdings Limited, Professor Halidu Abubakar identified ICT as an integral part of doing business across the world, pointing out that the Computer Village would create specialised market for computer and allied instruments.

 

Earlier in his address, the Group Managing Director, Harmony Holdings Limited, Mr. Tope Daramola had disclosed that the edifice would sit on 4,600 square meters of land.

 

Mr. Daramola added that the Computer Village would host a cluster of high-tech businesses and associated businesses that favour Information Technology related business that would enable the state to serve as hub in ICT business.

NIGERIAN NAVY RAIDS MORE ILLEGAL REFINING SITES IN THE NIGER DELTA

In continuation of the anti-crude oil theft operations of the Nigerian Navy in the Niger Delta, patrol teams deployed by the Service have raided and destroyed more illegal bunkering and refinery sites. This is even as the Nigerian Navy has intensified patrol of the maritime areas of the country in order to deter any form of security beaches and threats. 

On 16 November 2016, the patrol team deployed by Forward Operating Base (FOB) Formoso in Bayelsa State arrested MV MIDES 2 and 2 other Cotonou boats for alleged illegal bunkering activities at Sonikiri Community in Nembe LGA of Bayelsa State. MV MIDES 2 was while arrested carrying out transfer of suspected illegally refined AGO to the Cotonou boats. 

In another raid, on 18 Nov 2016, the patrol team deployed by NNS PATHFINDER in Rivers State destroyed an illegal refinery site containing     about 70,000 litres of stolen crude oil and 40,000 litres of illegally refined AGO at Bille Creek in Rivers State. 

Similarly the patrol team deployed by NNS DELTA arrested 4 persons onboard a Cotonou boat laden with suspected stolen crude oil on the Forcados River. This feat is in addition to an earlier raids conducted by the operatives in which a Cotonou boat laden with about 15 metric tones (MT) of product suspected to be crude oil was destroyed at Benneth Island in Delta State. 

LAGOS CANCELS MONTHLY ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION DAY

…Urges Residents To Comply With Environmental Laws

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday terminated the monthly environmental sanitation exercise which hitherto held for three hours on the last Saturday of every month.

The State Government, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, said the decision to cancel the monthly exercise followed a resolution arrived at Wednesday’s Executive Council meeting which approved the need for a robust review of the environmental laws and procedures in the state in order to meet the present day challenges and to promote a clean and healthy environment.

The Government noted that considering the present economic situation in the country, it was no longer appropriate to restrict movement of people for three hours in a mega city like Lagos at a time they should be pursuing commercial and entrepreneurial activities.

According to government, in the last two decades, Lagos has grown exponentially into a mega city with the attendant huge environmental problems associated with managing a population of over twenty million people.

But sadly, the environmental laws, policies and procedures being practiced in the State have not been able to match the phenomenal growth and the dream of a 24-hour economy, hence the need for the reform.

Ayorinde said the State Government was not unaware of a recent Court of Appeal judgment.

According to him, the thrust of the fresh initiatives, among others, is to promote holistic and modern solutions to the unique environmental challenges confronting the State, while encouraging citizens to voluntarily partner with government to achieve the desired goals.

The Statement said: “After a careful consideration, the State Executive Council has therefore resolved that the present economic climate can no longer support the continued lock down of a mega city like Lagos, when the citizens should be free to engage in commercial and entrepreneurial activities that can promote economic growth and prosperity.

“Furthermore, Government will also accelerate the introduction of fresh reforms through the passage of the new harmonized environmental laws that will drive meaningful changes in areas of harmonized billing, waste management, modern Landfill sites, noise pollution, introduction of an Environmental Trust Fund and an Environmental Advisory Council.

“The Government wishes to reiterate its strong commitment to a clean and secure environment for the benefit of its citizens, and will continue to provide the necessary leadership to meet the environmental challenges of a mega city like Lagos. Lagosians and visitors alike are therefore urged to embrace these changes and imbibe a culture of voluntarily maintaining and preserving their environment to create a beautiful and healthy city that we all can be proud of.”

The statement added that the State Government would henceforth be tougher in ensuring expeditious enforcement against contraventions of its policies and regulations and as such, residents should voluntarily comply with the necessary laws and support government in its bid to have a clean and healthy environment.

FG, STATES AND LGC’S SHARE N420,000 BILLION FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, 2016

A total of N420billion has been shared as Federal Allocation for the month of October 2016 by  the  Federal Government, State governments and Local Government Councils after the monthly meeting of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC)

According to the figures released by Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, the gross statutory revenue of N238.716 billion received for the month was lower than the N279.746 billion received in the previous month by N 41.030 billion. Crude Oil export volume decreased while the average price of Crude Oil dropped, resulting in revenue loss of about $51million in Federation export Sales.

Force Majeure was declared at Qua Iboe Terminal and the NGL lifting programmes with the  Force Majeure at Forcados Terminal still in place.

Shut-in and Shut-down of Pipelines for repairs and maintenance due to attacks on delivery pipelines also contributed to the low revenue.

Also, there were decreases in volume of import duty and Companies Income Tax (CIT) while PPT and Oil Royalty recorded marginal increases.

The distributable Statutory Revenue for the month is N 203.952 billion. The sum of N 6.330 billion was refunded by NNPC to FGN. 

There is a proposed distribution of N 109.108 billion from Excess PPT Account. Also, exchange gain of N 37.319 billion is proposed for distribution.

This brings the total revenue distributable for the current month (including VAT) to N 420.000 billion.

Consequently, from Statutory revenue, Federal Government received N96.674 billion (52.68%); States received N49.035 billion (26.72%); Local Government Councils received N37.804 billion (20.60%); while the Oil Producing States received N13.548 billion as 13% derivation revenue. 

Army Raises Alarm over Planned Amnesty Report on MASSOB/IPOB

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL’S PLANNED CAMPAIGN OF CALUMNY AGAINST THE NIGERIAN ARMY ON MASSOB/IPOB VIOLENT PROTESTS IN THE SOUTH EAST NIGERIA BETWEEN AUGUST 2015 AND AUGUST 2016

The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to a planned release of a report by Amnesty International on an unfounded storyline of mass killings of MASSOB/IPOB protesters by the military between August 2015 and August 2016.  We wish to debunk the insinuation that our troops perpetrated the killing of defenceless agitators. This is an outright attempt to tarnish the reputation of the security forces in general and the Nigerian Army in particular, for whatever inexplicable parochial reasons.  For umpteenth times, the Nigerian Army has informed the public about the heinous intent of this Non-Governmental Organisation which is never relenting in dabbling into our national security in manners that obliterate objectivity, fairness and simple logic.

The evidence of MASSOB/IPOB violent secessionist agitations is widely known across the national and international domains.  Their modus operandi has continued to relish violence that threatens national security.  Indeed between August 2015 and August 2016, the groups’ violent protests have manifested unimaginable atrocities to unhinge the reign of peace, security and stability in several parts of the South East Nigeria.  

A number of persons from the settler communities that hailed from other parts of the Country were selected for attack, killed and burnt.  Such reign of hate, terror and ethno-religious controversies that portend grave consequences for national security have been averted severally through the responsiveness of the Nigerian Army and members of the security agencies.  

These security agencies are always targeted for attack by the MASSOB/IPOB instruments of barbarism and cruelty.  For instance, in the protests of 30 – 31 May 2016, more than 5 personnel of the Nigeria Police were killed, while several soldiers were wounded, Nigeria Police vehicles were burnt down same as several others of the Nigerian Army that were vandalized.

The strategic Niger Bridge at Onitsha came under threat thus leading to disruption of socio-economic activities.  In the aftermath of the encounter that ensued between security agencies and MASSOB/IPOB militants many of own troops sustained varying degrees of injury.  In addition, the MASSOB/IPOB recurrent use of firearms, crude weapons as well as other cocktails such as acid and dynamites to cause mayhem remain a huge security threat across the Region.

In these circumstances, the Nigerian Army under its constitutional mandates for Military Aid to Civil Authority (MACA) and Military Aid to Civil Powers (MACP) has continued to act responsively in synergy with other security agencies to de-escalate the series of MASSOB/IPOB violent protests.  

Instructively, the military and other security agencies exercised maximum restraints despite the flurry of provocative and unjustifiable violence, which MASSOB/IPOB perpetrated.  The adherence to Rules of Engagement by the military has been sacrosanct in all of these incidents.  

Therefore, it is rather unfortunate for the Amnesty International to allow itself to be lured into this cheap and unpopular venture that aims to discredit the undeniable professionalism as well as responsiveness of the Nigerian Army in the discharge of its constitutional roles.             

Appeal Ruling: Adebutu Congratulates Maikarfi, Mimiko, Jegede

Honourable Oladipupo Adebutu, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Rural Development, has congratulated the National Caretaker Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ahmed Maikarfi, Governor of Ondo state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, and the Governorship candidate of  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede SAN and the people of Ondo state over the recent Court of Appeal ruling upholding Maikarfi's position as Chairman of PDP Caretaker committee and validating the candidacy of Eyitayo.

In a congratulatory message on Wednesday Hon. Adebutu praised the valour of the Justices of the Court of appeal for standing by the truth, equity and good conscience. 

"Today the judiciary has once again shown that not only is it the last hope of humanity against the subversion of justice and highhandedness of people in high places, the bench has proven that in spite of the tonnes of bad eggs within the system, there still exist men of integrity and protector of sanity"

"I rejoice with members of our great party, the PDP, the good people of Ondo state today most especially Dr. Olusegun Mimiko for his tenacity and doggedness in the face of judicial backed impunity. I have no doubt that the candidacy of Mr. Eyitayo Jedege will help solidify the foundation of growth already laid down by Governor Mimiko"

BON AWARDS 2016: ORGANISERS ANNOUNCE NOMINEES

The organizers of the Best of Nollywod Awards have released the list of nominees for the 2016 edition. The nominees’ list was unveiled in Lagos to an exclusive audience comprising entertainment editors and select stakeholders in the movie industry. 

According to Niran Adedokun, president of the BON jury, the release followed weeks of screening of over 120 entries made up of feature films in English, Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo, ten short films, five documentaries and seven television series.

While congratulating the nominees, Adedokun, also a popular Punch Newspapers columnist, acknowledged the resilience of Nigerian filmmakers for defying the current harsh economic realities to sustain their creative activities. He thanked organisers of the awards for the opportunity to serve while encouraging practitioners to continue to strive for excellence noting that the industry has unlimited prospects.

Aimed at recognising and promoting the best of films and filmmakers in Nigeria, the BON Awards, in less than one decade of its existence, has become the most authentic home grown platform honouring the richness and ingenuity of Nigerian cinema.
