Revealed! How MTN, 4 Banks And Serving Minister Laundered 12B Dollars
The Nigerian Senate has heard how South African telecom giant, MTN, allegedly laundered billions of dollars over a number of years, failing to pay necessary tax in the country.
Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West, raised the matter on Thursday. He accused MTN of removing $12 billion from Nigeria illegally.
Members of the upper chamber were clearly angered when the revelations were made on the floor that the company connived with four commercial banks and a serving minister to ferret out money from Nigeria.
Mr. Melaye, representing Kogi West, said on Thursday in Abuja at the senate that MTN, has been involved in gross money laundering.
Mr. Melaye said, “Between 2006 and 2016, the MTN, in collaboration with four commercial banks and with the help of a serving Minister, has moved over $12bn out of this country”.
He made the revelation under order 42 of the Senate rule and said it was particularly painful that the company was involved in illegal money movement at a time Nigeria was in economic mess.
“All hands must be on deck to recover every loot in the country. We are in a precarious situation and now is the time to recover every stolen money in the country,” he said.
The Senate president, Bukola Saraki, approved Mr. Melaye’s request that the matter be formally tabled with necessary prayers on Tuesday, an indication the senate is likely to launch full investigation into the scam.
The Senate is hearing the case nearly a year after a Premium Times’ investigation exposed how MTN for several years, sidestepped Nigerian laws to ship billions of dollars abroad — in so doing, paid less tax in Nigeria.
The 11-month-long investigation showed that the company had been running circles around Nigerian revenue authorities using a complex but noxious tax avoidance scheme called Transfer Pricing.

AU, AFRIMA PARTNER FELABRATION 2016
Following the successful release of the full Nominees List for the 2016 All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, the African Union Commission, AUC, and the International Committee of AFRIMA have entered into partnership with Felabration 2016, the annual festival organised to celebrate the late music maestro and Afrobeat creator, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
The decision to support the 2016 edition of Felabration with theme “Everybody Say Yeah Yeah” was disclosed by the Associate Producer, AFRIMA, Ms. Adenrele Niyi to the Founder of Felabration and daughter of the late music legend, Ms. Yeni Kuti, when she paid a courtesy call to the AFRIMA Secretariat in Lagos on Thursday, September 15.
According to Ms Niyi, AFRIMA will be fully involved with Felabration 2016 from the first event, the Senior Secondary Schools Debate, which holds on Wednesday, October 5, and from Monday, October 10 when the week-long festivities commence.
“There’s no better way to begin this partnership with Felabration than through the school debate for secondary school students in Lagos State. It creates the perfect platform for the AFRIMA Foundation to purse her Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in Lagos State, the 2016 Official Host City for AFRIMA through our CSR initiative, Educate-A-Child (Our Voice). It is an Africa-wide campaign that took AFRIMA to Bakoteh Proper Lower Basic School, Banjul, Gambia, in May 2016 to interact with the teaching staff and students. The visit to the school was part of the programmes lined up for the AFRIMA-AUC joint media/cultural conference held in Gambia on May 24, 2016. During our visit, AFRIMA donated educational materials, computers and musical equipment to the school.”
The Associate Producer stated that in keeping with the objectives of the CSR to raise the standard of education in Africa and create conducive learning environments for African children, participating schools and winners at the school debate would benefit from the Educate-A-Child endowment.
“We are set to replicate this commitment to education in Nigeria by donating prizes in the form of educational materials and equipment to both participating schools and winners at the Felabration 2016 Schools Debate. Our goal is to encourage young people that education is rewarding and to show that learning will help them understand and take pride in their cultural heritage. Remember Fela won the 2016 AFRIMA Legend Award which tells you that we are proud of Fela Kuti’s achievements and legacy as a music composer and artiste. Naturally, we are excited to be associated with a brand that celebrates artistic excellence as AFRIMA does.”
Responding, Yeni Kuti thanked AFRIMA and the AU for the gesture and urged more organisations to emulate AFRIMA.
“We are delighted that AFRIMA will be participating in Felabration 2016 starting with the school debate; it’s been a challenge hosting this school debate and to have AFRIMA come in through the Educate-A-Child CSR is a relief. Each year, the debate has been very interesting and the schools and students benefit greatly in terms of exposure to new knowledge and the opportunity to increase the educational materials available for learning.” Ms. Kuti added that the topic for this year’s debate, “Reparation: Yes or No?” will challenge the students to delve into African history and learn new things about their heritage. “We want to keep Fela’s love of culture and learning alive among young people,” she said.
While concluding the discussion, Adenrele Niyi urged the Fela Foundation to also get involved in the AFRIMA 2016 programme of events from November 4-6, 2016 which includes the Africa Music Business Summit on Friday, November 4 and the AFRIMA Music Village, an open concert-style festival featuring nominees and other top billed music stars, also on Friday, November 4.
In partnership with the AUC and the Official Host City, Lagos State, AFRIMA 2016 grand awards ceremony holds on Sunday, November 6 with thousands of guests expected in Lagos for the various events.
HIJAB: LASG SEEKS CAUTION FROM ALL PARTIES
The Lagos State Government has called for caution by all parties as it relates to the interpretation of the Appeal Court ruling over the use of hijab by female Muslim students in the State’s public primary and secondary schools, advising that the relative religious peace enjoyed in the State should not be sacrificed on the altar of religion.
A statement issued on Tuesday by the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, stated that it was misleading and an attempt to misrepresent the general public that the right to wear hijab has been granted in Lagos State-owned public schools when the appeal process has not been exhausted.
The statement emphasized that while it is an indisputable fact that the Court of Appeal in its judgment of 21st July, 2016 upturned the judgment of the High Court of Lagos State, which had inter alia ruled that the use of hijab is not part of the school uniform in public primary and secondary schools in Lagos State and the rights of the Applicants under Sections 38 and 42 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended has not been violated, the State Government had since appealed the ruling of the Appeal Court to the Supreme Court.
According to the statement “It is not in dispute that the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division on 21st of July, 2016 upturned the judgment of the High Court of Lagos State which had inter alia ruled that the use of hijab is not part of school uniform in public primary and secondary school in Lagos State and the rights of the Applicants under Sections 38 and 42 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended has not been violated.”
‘’Just as the Applicants counsel exercised the constitutional right of appeal by appealing against the judgment, the state government has also appealed against the judgment of the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court,” the statement concluded.
The statement added that it was the position of the State Government that the issues that arose from the judgment of the Court of Appeal touches on the interpretation of the provisions of the Constitution and it is for the purposes of clarity that the Notice of Appeal together with the Motion on Notice for injunction pending appeal were served on the counsel to the applicants.
It therefore enjoined all those involved to allow the legal process to take its course on the matter and await the determination of the appeal lodged at the Supreme Court emphasizing that it was in the best interest of all parties and jurisprudence that the matter be given final interpretation by the Supreme Court.
The State Government however acknowledged the position of the Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria and other segments of the Muslim community while urging understanding and restraint on their part, pending a final determination of the matter in the Supreme Court.

Ogun PDP commends Maikarfi, Sheriff on Reconciliation
The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the leadership of Hon. Sikirulahi Ogundele has commended the move by the factional leaders of the party, Senators Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Markafi to end the crisis which has been plaguing the party for some months now, saying this has proven that the PDP is one indivisible entity that is ready to re-position to take over the leadership of the country at the centre.
In a statement signed on behalf of Ogundele by the Publicity Secretary of the party in Ogun State, Alhaji Malik Olamilekan Ibitoye and made available to the media, the party Chairman said the reconciliation was long expected, but that it came at the most auspicious time.
"We are really impressed by the meeting between the foremost leaders of our great party. It is the best thing that has happened to the country at this time that she is experiencing the most difficult economic situation occasioned by directionless and ruderless leadership being provided by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
"The PDP is now battle ready to contest the next general elections and it is certain that this is what the teeming population of the country was waiting for as our party has the solution to the myriad of problems confronting the nation at this material time. We have gone through the process of rebirth and millions of our members across the nation are ready to Change the negative change that has been fraudulently foisted on Nigerians," the statement read.
Ogundele also enjoined the PDP in the 36 states of the federation to join hands together to move the country forward, adding that the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government does not understand the dynamics of governance.
Ibitoye further quoted the state party chairman appealing to the leadership of state chapters of the PDP, where factions exist to borrow a leaf from the exemplary and selfless display of political maturity by leadership of the national organ of the party, and join hands to reclaim the position of the party in the country.
The statement added that the trust reposed in the party by majority of Nigerians is indisputable and that the party has put the past behind it and is set to continue from where it stopped in 2015 by the year 2019 "when we are sure that the people of Nigeria would do the needful and return us to power at the federal level and in many states of the federation."
The two leaders of the PDP, Senators Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Markafi had earlier today met at an undisclosed location where they agreed to resolve all the issues affecting the party.
At the end of the meeting, representatives of each faction had jointly addressed a press conference where they said their leaders were working together to reposition the party.
While the Secretary of the National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ben Obi represented Makarfi, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, represented Sheriff at the briefing.
In the joint statement, which was read by Ojougboh and corroborated by Obi, the two leaders said that their meeting was without prejudice to all outstanding matters in court.
The statement said, “This is without prejudice to all outstanding matters in court. At a meeting held this morning between the two of us, a holistic review of the state of affairs of our great party, PDP, was deliberated upon.
“In reviewing the crisis that has engulfed our party since the loss of the 2015 general elections after 15 years of uninterrupted leadership at the centre, it became obvious to both of us as principal actors that it is time to heal the wounds and bring about a united, focused and constructive opposition party that can bring sanity to our democratic process.”
