AIG moves to restructure Maritime Command

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Maritime Command, Mohammad Musa Katsina, has embarked on the restructuring of the Command for more effectiveness.
Katsina, who took over the Command on April 13, 2016, has also established inter-agency agreement for the training of the officers under him.
At a maiden meeting with the officers and men of the Command on Thursday, the AIG announced the creation of two Offices to ensure better effectiveness in its operations.
These are the Surveillance, Intelligence and Investigation Department to be headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Salahudeen Lawan, and the Legal/Public Relations Office, headed by an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Omolola Odutola.
More Offices will be created as promised by the AIG to strengthen the operations of the Maritime Command in the coming weeks.
A statement on Friday by ASP Odutola said AIG Katsina, a holder of a BSc. in Management Science from the University of Sokoto and recipient of many awards, who is well grounded in investigation techniques and crime combating, said his mission is to restructure the Maritime Command in response to the recent needs to quell crises on the nation’s waterways.
Odutola said in the statement: “This can be seen from the sophistication of the modus operandi of robbery cases that has happened in recent past.
“So also did the AIG vow to quell the issues of pipeline vandalization, tackle sea pirates and checkmate excessive recklessness of smugglers on our waterways.”
To this end, Katsina was said to have put in place quick rescue responders and viable divers in his Command.
He is also said to be working with sister security agencies to train police officers on aquatic life and aquatic combat operations.
He is said to be optimistic that during his tenure, positive impacts would be felt by all operators and stakeholders in the Maritime Sector.
Katsina, according to the statement, has commenced the restructuring of the Command in the bid to ensure commitment by personnel.
He told the officers at the meeting on Thursday that only those without clean records have something to fear under him.
He said it is now a must that requisite passes must be obtained from the Administration Department before anyone proceeds on any form of leave, while any officer who is  reported sick must obtain proper documentation before proceeding on excuse duty.
This, the statement said, is in the attempt to organise the personnel working in the Command.
Katsina said his operations would be intelligence driven, while urging members of the society to give their undivided support.
He added: “Only deviants are scared of sanctions.
“My intention is to fight miscreants and their likes within the 20 states of the Maritime jurisdiction of this Command.”

Sterling Bank’s shares gain 3.2% as Moody's reaffirms ratings

Moody’s Investors Service, a leading global rating agency, has re-affirmed the resilience of the Sterling Bank franchise by maintaining the lender’s standalone Baseline Credit Assessment (BCA) ratings of B3.

This cheery news came hours after the lender’s share price appreciated by 3.25 per cent in today’s trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) to close at N1.59 per share, indicating that that investors’ confidence remained strong.

BCAs are inputs to Moody's joint-default analysis for ratings on issuers subject to extraordinary government support. It measures the financial strength of issuers subject to extraordinary government support, which can include banks, sub-sovereigns and government-related corporate issuers (GRIs). It explicitly excludes the likelihood of extraordinary government support in the event that a bailout is required, but does incorporate support as may be necessary for ordinary operations.

The rating agency in a statement made available to newsmen in Lagos, expressed confidence that with its current profile, Sterling Bank will remain resilient in the face of more challenging operating conditions given its adequate capital and liquidity buffers.

The agency in the statement explained, “Sterling Bank’s B2 deposit ratings continue to incorporate one notch of rating uplift on account of government support as the Bank’s ratings remain lower than the sovereign rating and its foreign currency deposit rating is now in line with the lowered foreign currency deposit ceiling of B2”.

Specifically, Moody’s rated Sterling Bank b3 in Adjusted Baseline Credit Assessment; B1 (cr) in Long-Term Counterparty Risk Assessment; B2 in Long-Term Issuer Rating (Local and Foreign Currency); B2 in Long-Term Deposit Rating (Local and Foreign Currency) while the outlook changed to stable.

It would be recalled that the agency in a statement last March, noted that the  ratings of the lender reflects its “solid asset quality metrics and provision coverage, improvements to its Information Technology (IT) infrastructure and risk management processes as well as its high liquidity buffers and a solid deposit funding base”.

According to Moody’s, the primary driver for confirming Sterling Bank’s BCAs is Moody’s expectation of the resilience of the banks’ standalone credit profiles despite the challenging operating environment. “While lower oil prices will continue to exert pressure on corporate borrowers and on the domestic economy more generally, we expect any deterioration in asset quality and liquidity at Sterling Bank to be manageable and within the tolerance levels assumed in their standalone ratings given their capital and liquidity buffers”, the agency stated.

Commenting, the Bank’s Executive Director, Finance & Strategy, Mr. Abubakar Suleiman, noted that the reaffirmation of the rating is a testimony of the resilient of the Bank to remain strong and professional despite the challenging operating environment in which it operate.

Sterling Bank Plc, “the one-customer bank”, is a full-service national commercial bank with an asset base above N800 billion with over 187 business offices and more than 800 ATMs nationwide. In over 55 years of service, Sterling Bank (formerly NAL Bank) has evolved from the nation’s pre-eminent investment banking institution to a fully-fledged commercial bank. Furthermore, with a strong national presence, Sterling Bank is one of the top 30 most capitalized institutions on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. The bank also remains one of Nigeria’s fastest growing banks and is recognized as a dynamic financial services organization.

The Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II has described the ancient shrine of Olokun in Ile IFE as one of the greatest mysteries of God.

Ooni Ogunwusi accompanied by his beautiful queen Yeyeluwa Wuraola Ogunwusi stated this at the just concluded annual Olokun traditional festival held at the shrine located on Olokun street, Oke-Atan area of  Ile-Ife globally accepted to be the cradle of Yoruba race. "in the beginning before the creation of man, God had sent 401 of his angels with different assignments unto the earth to form the very first society called pre-genesis world also known as IFE OODAYE.
Olokun was among the angels who are today Yoruba across the world, she was assigned to function as the goddess of the sea, she lived both spiritually and physically as a very wealthy wife of Oduduwa who was the god of prayers. God created both the heaven and the earth which included the oceans  in His mysterious way, the ocean as one of His greatest mystery, which is the revelation of His spirit via "Olokun" which literarily means "the one who owns the sea" or the "goddess of the sea".

Ambode Tasks Religious Leaders

Pray for Nigeria’s prosperity, Ambode tasks religious leaders

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday urged religious leaders to intercede fervently for the country in bringing about greater economic prosperity, just as he tasked political leaders to prioritize the welfare of the masses.

Governor Ambode, who spoke while declaring open the 33rd Synod of the Lagos Diocese of Anglican Communion, held at the Our Saviour’s Church, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, said the country was in dire need of God’s blessings and prosperity at this critical point in time and the church has a great role to play.

The Governor expressed delight at the theme of the Synod which was to discuss the Ecclesiastical business vis-a-vis the role of the church in the country, saying the topic was apt and timely, especially at this trying period for the economy of the country.

“At the critical time in the history of Nigeria, there is no better time for us to talk about what the position of the church should be in this trying time. There is nothing else that can be that significant for us to actually gather and talk about the business of the church and also about how it affects the country itself,” the Governor said.

While alluding to the fact that the church has a major role to play in the economy, Governor Ambode said those saddled with responsibility of administering the country must put the interest of the people first.

According to the Governor, “Nigeria is in dire need of God’s greater prosperity and blessings at this time and there are no other people that can actually do that for us except we take it up by spiritual blessings that come out from the church.

“So, one can imagine that there is a correlation between the economy and the church and if the economy prospers, it is very clear that the welfare of the people in the church will also improve. So, it is in the best interest of those of us who are in government to ensure that the economy prospers or else people will not come into the church,” he said.

The Governor, however, expressed hope that deliberations at the Synod would be of greater benefit to humanity.

He assured the Anglican Communion that his administration would continue to sustain the symbiotic relationship that has always existed between the Government and the Lagos Diocese over the years.

Also speaking at the Synod, retired Justice of the Supreme Court, George Oguntade commended Governor Ambode for his remarkable footprints in the state in the last 11 months, saying that the good works of the Governor can indeed be felt everywhere.

Oguntade, however, expressed optimism that the Governor has succeeded in laying a strong foundation for a successful tenure in office which will be of immense benefit to the people.

On his part, Bishop of Lagos Diocese, Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Ephraim Ademowo, also commended Governor Ambode for his giant strides so far, saying the State is surely in good hands.

“As the morning shows the day, Governor Ambode has always shown that he is a serious minded person. I have personally known him for 45 years to be intellectual propitious, brilliant, well focused, hardworking, disciplined, firm and gorgeous,” Ademowo said.

E-Revenue Sustainability Conference holds in Abuja May 10

Preparations are already in top gear ahead of the maiden edition of the E-Revenue Sustainability Conference, an annual forum organized by Intermarc Consulting Limited and other stakeholders in the financial services sector of the economy.

According to the organizers, the conference will proffer strategies and tactics to grow revenues from existing and new IGR sources within the federation, while also exploring effective ways of collecting revenues electronically for the nation’s economic growth.

In a chat with newsmen in Lagos, the CEO, Intermarc Consulting Limited, Mr. Adeyinka Adeyemi noted that if information communication technology (ICT) is deployed to government revenue collection and administration, the internally generated revenues (IGRs) will displace crude oil.

Adeyemi lamented that most state governments generate 15 per cent of their revenue and depend on federal allocation for sustenance, arguing that this is no longer sustainable. Government, he said, needs to focus on a planned strategy for a sharp turn-around from oil dependence to self-sustainability.

“The challenge with IGR however is how government will design and develop sustainable strategies to grow revenue as well as effective ways to collect these revenues sustainably across the federation. This can be achieved on the platform of Federal Government’s independent electronic revenue collection scheme throughout the country by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“This new scheme under the treasury single account (TSA) initiative is aimed at deploying the automate platforms and electronic payment channels to handle revenue collection for local and state governments, MDAs straight to into government coffers, he said.

According to him, the conference scheduled for between May 10 and 11, 2016, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, with the theme; ‘Developing a National Revenue Sustainability Framework’ will provide opportunity for federal and state ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) as well as local authorities to fashion out strategies to grow revenues from existing internally generated revenue (IGR) sources and explore electronic method of collection.

He further said that top stakeholders in the financial sector  led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun have been penciled down to deliver lecture on the gains of exploring E-Revenue collection.

NO PLANS TO BUILD HOTEL AT IJAIYE HOUSING ESTATE.

Contrary to claims credited to one Mr James Ayeni, a resident of Ijaiye Low Cost Housing Estate,Lagos that a piece of land beside Keke High School sold to Jotito Vanni Limited by LSDPC is intended for an hotel has been described as mere fallacy, deliberate distortion of fact and a planed campaign of calumny.

Mr. Seun Olukoga, Project Manager, Jotito Vanni Limited, speaking said "We acquired the land since 2006, we have building approval for blocks of residential flats. Lagos State Government will never approve the siting of an hotel within a residential estate such as this ."

Speaking further,  "LSDPC has the certificate of occupancy for the entire estate of which this particular land form part of. We have all our documents obtained and registered with Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) and Lagos State Government, they are all verifiable".

Narrating the genesis of the drama Olukoga said " On Friday, May 16, 2016 they came to stop us from working at the site. They took us to the police at Area G, we tendered documents establishing us as the authentic owner as well as our plan to build residential flats on the land. We have had two subsequent appointments with the  DPO pen cinema, they have failed to turn up".

He also stated that "this deliberate spreading of falsehood is to demonize the project and he believes that the man, Ayeni is acting out a clandestine script for some unknown interest.

We are law abiding citizens we will not do anything outside the ambit of the law. Let us make it clear, we have no intention to build a hotel on the land. Our approved plan is for residential flats. We have already commenced construction."

He clarified that the claim that the piece of land is the playground for the school is not true. The piece of land is fenced out and outside the school premises, that if indeed it is for the school it won't be fenced out and LSDPC would not sold the land.

"As far as we are concerned, there is no contention whatsoever as to who owns title to the land. We have always been in possession since 2006 and we have continuous  unfettered access. The project will be completed soonest and their falsehood will finally be exposed."

"We trust that well meaning members of the society will not be deceived by this interlopers nor will the good government of Lagos state be goaded into taking unwarranted action."
